About
Daisy is at least 20 years old, a milestone that more than earns her a season of rest. As a Belgian draft mare, she likely spent her life working as a tool for humans, possibly plowing fields and producing multiple foals along the way.
At 17.3 hands (71 inches at the withers), she is a towering presence; steady, grounded, and unmistakably strong.
Despite a lifetime of labor, Daisy carries herself with quiet grace. Around humans, she is calm, gentle, and deeply sweet. Within the herd, she holds a tolerant but firm presence, the kind of mare who doesn’t seek conflict but knows how to set boundaries. She has taken young Barneby under her wing and is stepping beautifully into the role of steady role model.
Like many horses who have given their bodies to years of work, Daisy carries significant arthritis and general soreness. We recently discovered a long-fractured tooth that has likely caused her discomfort for quite some time. Pain she endured quietly, as so many working horses do. She will require a surgical tooth extraction later this year, and we are actively raising funds for this several-thousand-dollar procedure to ensure her comfort moving forward.
Daisy has given her life in service. Now, this season belongs to her.
If you feel called to support her care and upcoming dental surgery, consider becoming one of her guardians.
